Disappointing but good attempt
The Review
Nagarjuna’s Kedi is disappointment but it’s a good and different attempt from both Nagarjuna and the debutant director Kiran. It’s different because the story, the narration and the characters are not routine. It’s disappointing because the debutant director failed to make it as an interesting entertainer. Both the first half and second half are just okay. There is no punch in the narration. The pace is constant throughout the film. There are no major up and downs. Overall… the film is neither boring nor exciting. Just an okay film. The film may not become successful at box office but defiantly the film is different from the films that are coming in Tollywood these days and from characterizations to character relationships to narration this film pushes boundaries to large extent. More care on the screenplay and more production values would have saved this film.
Synopsis
Young Ramesh aka Rummy (Nagarjuna) wants to runway from home along with his sweetheart Janaki (Mamatha Mohan Das). But she says no to go with him and she wants him to earn more and more money. Ramesh alone runs away. He starts his gray journey. Plays gambling, steals money, steals gold … He keeps on earning money from moving from one plays to another. Meanwhile ACP Shekhar (Shiyaji Shinde) keep trying to caught Ramesh. In Goa Ramesh keep working for a goon Chandra (Ankur). He also helps to find the sister of a foreigner Linda (Nadia). And now Ramesh eyes falls on 50 crore necklace. He needs a woman partner to steal the necklace. He hires Sandhya to help him and she continues to help him. Meanwhile Ramesh gets another assignment from Chandra. What is that Assignment? Did he finish it? Who is this Sandhya and what happened to his childhood sweet heart Janaki? Is all about the rest of the film.
Artistic Performances
Nagarjuna
carried away the film on his shoulder. It a different character for him. Rummy is not a typical Tollywood hero with all idle and good qualities. It has grey shades. Hats off to Nag for accepting and doing this role. A star (especially in Tollywood) must have lot of guts to accept such characters.
Mamatha Mohan Das
justified her role. She is not hot but she is good. Among other actors
Bramhanandam
tried his best to tickle audience with his performance but the scenes are not taken well and the audience hardly laughs. Bad Guy
Ankur
did his role nicely and so
Harsha Vardhan
, who plays Nagarjuna’s friend.
Technical Performances
Technically also this film is different and every technician from cinematographer to art director is trying to push the boundaries further. The story by the debutant director Kiran is fresh. But though he tried to come up with a neat screenplay he failed to incorporate the commercial elements properly in the screenplay. Kiran also failed in executing the scenes. For example the scenes of Bramhanandam. But the director has the vision and he came up with completely different style from what the routine Tollywood films doing these days.
The other major setback is the music by Sandeep Chowta. The songs are just average and so the background score. Hats off to cinematographer Sarvesh Murari. It’s really excellent. Mostly he fallowed the realistic style especially the childhood scenes. Editing also good. All other departments justified their roles.
